Leonardo DiCaprio- Backed Coalition Invests in Critical Coastal Nurseries
New Funding Aims to Protect Millions of Acres for Marine Wildlife
A major new conservation initiative is set to protect vital coastal habitats in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, a crucial migratory corridor stretching from Costa Rica to Ecuador. Supported by actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio through the Bezos Earth Fund, the project focuses on areas that have historically been overlooked.
Safeguarding the Ocean's Nursery Grounds
While the open ocean corridor is a recognized global model for marine conservation, the coastal bays, estuaries, and mangroves that serve as nurseries for young sharks and sea turtles have not received the same level of protection. This new funding will empower local organizations to "rewild" and safeguard millions of acres of these essential habitats.
Empowering Local Partners and Communities
The grants will directly support a coalition of conservation partners, including organizations like Ancon, Fondo Accion, and the Krucial Foundation. The funding is designed to strengthen the entire migratory corridor by providing communities with the necessary tools and expertise.
- Enhanced monitoring and data analysis through partners like Global Fishing Watch.
- On
- the-ground conservation experience and enforcement support from WildAid.
- Scientific research and collaboration facilitated by the Migramar network.
This comprehensive approach ensures that the coastal habitats remain resilient, directly benefiting iconic species and supporting the regional goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 (30x30).
